Director of Fun !!!

Yeah thats right. Sounds like a dream job doesn't it,"Director of Fun". Well it's a dream come true for a youngster from Leicester who applied for the post of the director of the Rail Museum in York. And yeah, I forgot to mention his name - Sam Pointon, Age 6!!!

Here is the Man himself at work and the letter he wrote to apply for the job. Talk about being ambitious.
"I am only 6 but I think I can do this job" - Wow!! This is one confident kid.

And his qualification for the job include among other things that he has an electric train track and can control 2 trains at a time.

But the parents of this train crazy kid had a tough time convincing him that he still had to go to school despite landing his dream Job. That just Blows!!!

Warren Buffett's biggest bet !!!!

How big is the bet??

$26 Billion!!!

Thats right Warren Buffett made his largest investment yet buying out Burlington Northern Santa Fe, a Texas based railroad company.

Well he has definitely turned heads with this investment and it is not in the least because of the size of the investment but more so because of the sector. Trains.

The growth of the railways spearheaded the industrial revolution across the world. But when most of the world thinks the heyday for the railways is over. Here is Buffett thinking otherwise.

He says it is the most efficient way to transport goods. A ton of goods can be transported for 470 miles in one gallon of diesel.

Wow!! that is the solution for the impending global energy crisis.

Also he says in this day and age when pollution is a major problem each train can take away 280 truck of the road.

He has done his research and he has placed his bet. He also seems to suggest it is the safest bet for the world.

When Warren Buffett talks you listen.

Do not Stand at my grave and weep

Well today is the 8th of November and I turn 23.Just one of those days. Suddenly I remembered this poem my Mary Fyre. Its a beautiful poem and I thought I should put it up on my blog.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.
I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.
I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.
I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

The Fun Theory

How do you change people's behavior? They don't seem to listen to reason or logic and if you force them, they rebel. They dunno what is good for them. So how do you change them???

Questions that have plagued a lot of us right?? Well what is the answer? I dunno, but these bunch of guys seem to have found the answer. This is what they have to say about it "We believe that the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better is by making it fun to do. We call it The fun theory."

Back again

Sorry Folks

Blogging took a back seat the past few months as I got busy with other things.
But i am back and am here to stay.
Why this sudden change of heart??

Well these are the reasons:-
1. Kiruba of Kiruba.com and "The Kiruba Show" fame was here at LIBA last week and my interaction with him inspired me to start typing (Follow him on twitter here)

2.Basto a classmate of mine has started a very interesting blog which is gaining popularity here at LIBA. It is a gossip column on what goes on in LIBA. Read his blog

3.I have been feeling guilty myself about not blogging.

So let me finish by saying "I'm Back"

Your Girl friend is an optical Illusion !!!!!

Perception.Everybody who has sat through a class on perception must be familiar with this picture. In this picture you can either see an old lady or a beautiful girl - depending on how you look at it or rather depending on what you want to see.

Have you ever wondered why someone who you think is beautiful doesn't seem to interest you friends at all? Well here is a video I found on the net made by a bunch of college kids with a funny take on this very same idea. There is also a Seinfeld episode with this as the theme. So have fun watching the video. Before you leave something to think about.

"There is no truth. There is only perception"

The Art of War

It’s been almost 8 months since I joined LIBA (one of the most reputed business schools in the country) and I have realised its about time I started a business blog. There have been a lot of events and programs here which have added great value to my business education. But I think the most enriching one would be the “Guest Lecture Series” started under the umbrella of the “Beyond Management Program”. We have at least two Guest lecturers coming to LIBA from around the World giving lectures on various aspects of management and current issues. But that is not what I want to talk about in this post. It is that the most often quoted book in this guest lecture series is a book that was written way back in the 6th Century BC. Yup, that’s right. And the Book is called “The Art of War” written by a Chinese general named Sun Tzu.

So, what is this book about??? Well Wikipedia has this to say  “The Art of War is one of the oldest books on military strategy in the world. It is the first and one of the most successful works on strategy and has had a huge influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu was the first to recognize the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a competitive environment, competing plans collide, creating unexpected situations.”

Well I have already started reading it and believe me it quite interesting. I feel the book has something for everyone and is a must read for Business Students.

Below are two links for an online version of the book. The first one has a commentary on the text while the other is just the plain translation. Have fun reading it.
