The Irrelavance of God

This piece of article tries to argue that man’s eternal quest to prove/disprove the existence of God is one of the histories most wasted endeavours because it is still not going to change anything significantly. I have tried to use logic to argue my case. I have also taken up the Christian faith in the second part my argument because
1. It is the largest practiced faith in the World
2. It is the faith I was born into, the faith I am most familiar with.
First, let me introduce to a Pascal’s Wager.
Blaise Pascal was a renowned mathematician and physicist who lived in the 1600’s. He used decision theory to argue his case that people should lead a life as if god existed as it was the only option in which he had everything to gain and nothing to lose.
| | God Exists | God Does not Exist |
| Live life as if God Exists (Good Life) | +∞ (Heaven) | 0 |
| Live life as if God doesn’t exist (Evil Life) | -∞(Hell) | 0 |
Here he assumes the existence of God cannot be determined. He assumes it is more like a coin toss. There is a 50:50 chance that god exists. So given these assumptions the conclusion is that leading a good life i.e. Live life as if God existed is the most profitable option to bet on since we have nothing to lose if god does not exit and everything to gain if he did. (And we maybe betting with our eternal lifeJ)
Here Pascal makes no difference between a believer and an atheist. Any person who leads a good life will go to heaven irrespective of their faith.
Now this brings me to the second part of my argument. In the Bible God is described as being
1. A Jealous God*- he does not look favourably on people worshipping other Gods
2. A Just God**- he judges the whole humankind the same way
The decision tree for these 2 situations is like this
A Jealous God
| | Believer | Non- Believer |
| Live life as if God Exists (Good Life) | +∞ (Heaven) | -∞(Hell) |
| Live life as if God doesn’t exist (Evil Life) | -∞(Hell) | -∞(Hell) |
A Just God
| | Believer | Non- Believer |
| Live life as if God Exists (Good Life) | +∞ (Heaven) | +∞ (Heaven) |
| Live life as if God doesn’t exist (Evil Life) | -∞(Hell) | -∞(Hell) |
Thus the concept of a Jealous God can be rejected.
Conclusion:
1. 1.1. The existence of God itself can neither be proved nor denied. Assuming there is equal probability for both. The greatest gain can be got from leading a good life. Also there is nothing to lose choosing this option.
2. 2.2. If God exists he is going to be a Just God. He will Judge you and reward you based on how you lived your life here on earth and not on what you believed in.
3. 3.3. So leading a Good life is more important. If you do that everything else really doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter whether God exists or not. It really does not matter what religion you follow, actually there is no need to follow one.
4. 4.4. So the Concept of God or Religion becomes trivial – Irrelevant.
Disclaimer: I am not trying to say whether God exists or not. All I am trying to say is that it really does not matter, only the way you live matters.
*Exodus 20:5 - “for I the Lord your God am a jealous God”
**Psalm 9:8 – “And He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.”
